The Carle Foundation provided unrestricted grant funding for research into stem cell technologies and applied stem cell processing. Funding will support research in several areas, including isolating adult stem cells from bone marrow for use in treating cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and cancer, and in developing new bone tissue.
University researchers are collaborating with iCyt Mission Technology (now a subsidiary of Sony Biotechnology) to isolate stem cells for research purposes. Efforts are focused on developing a process in which more adult stem cells can be produced, isolated more quickly, and made more stable so they can be shipped to researchers working on Parkinson's disease and different neurological and spinal cord problems.
